EVERYTHING HAPPENS ON THE STREET - ALTERATIONS STUDIO, residency, public programme and exhibition, PEER 2015
Handling, Repairs and Alternations Studio
July-August PEER GALLERY
During the external refurbishment of PEER Gallery, we were invited to initiated a series of ‘street acts’ and ‘street scenes’, thinking about the street as a place that blurs ideas of home, work and public sharing. We set up a process that involved implementing a simple gesture on the street using a pile of straw that was continuously rolled into bundles.
The action became a mechanism to engage passers by in conversations. Each conversation gave an insight into Hoxton Street and led to a simple story “The one who carries the straw”. The straw as a material acted as something familiar to all cultural groups, bringing different voices into the project and revealing a surprising familiarity between them.
