ASTATE, a long-term research, events and residency programme between 2011-2014
astate is a framework to explore the interplay between site based/ collective processes and statutory engagement models within urban planning.
astate is a response to ongoing work with people in the built environment that began in 2008.
The work brings together several other projects, including public meeting the walworth archive , elasticity the wick archive and wenlock, built environments.
We have explored the idea of astate through the development of social actions, text, scripts, sound, video documentation and a series of public meetings.

Today astate is two things
an idea
astate is an activity of working with people and place. It shows that the public still exists and that spaces still function as places to create a shared method, to extend the idea of home, to produce something from a collective process. Space offers the opportunity for spontaneous encounter, meeting, a point of exchange within a variety of formats. You should be able to create knowledge transfer, watch and linger in multi-directional and poly rhythmical places of production, where the city is a public activity. astate brings attention to the hand made, to collective working, exploring the elastic and multi directional terms for change and progress. astate explores the importance of a humanisation of architecture, materials and processes.
and a local response
astate is a response to the statutory re-formation of a public space into an array of patrols. A statutory quick paced narrative, an opportunity area, an opportunity every 12 minutes, a bundle of paper documents, a space somehow continuously lost within newly formed publicly accessible areas. A public space that becomes a format so inaccessible it is no longer recognisable as public. A public space that has become stale and monotonous. A place to experience only with the eyes, a place of lines, line after line of silver birch trees, intermittently lit areas. A hyper-specialised space wherein any excursion outside of these ordered parameters becomes something abnormal. A space created as public without containing any public creation.

Between 2012-2014, ASTATE engaged several artists in 'MOTION' - a residency programme within our artist and home - space SYZYGY. Residents included Leonardo Ulian and Rupert Ludlow, Emma Dixon, Nela Milic, Cluster Bomb, Paul Lorenz and Gail Barker.
